:05, happening as we speak, a big sink hole on highway 87 in san jose. that's right along the southbound side of the highway near west virginia street. work crews are out there and so is ktvu tara moyarti but what's the very latest? >> workers workers will not continue work until engineers arrive. we had to move because it was simply too dangerous. you can see where they've blocked out one southbound lane of 87 on the left and then one lane of alma avenue on the right. the sink hole is about 30 feet wide. there's a big gap underneath the median. now caltrans discovered the problem tuesday. they came out. they poured some gravel. sort of a band aid fix. and last night they compressed the gravel and found it sank. you can see where the concrete is exposed now. there's a huge crack running up and down on that roadway. they shutdown some lanes on the freeway. we are close to west virginia street. just to give you an idea where we are on 87. crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sink hole. damage is pretty extensive. the highway seems to be moving up. right now let's check i

here you can see the sinkhole is pretty big, about 30 feet across and you can actually put your hand underneath the median there and it will come out on the other side. it is -- it has forced crews to shut down one lane of highway 87 southbound in the alma avenue on-ramp. caltrans discovered the problem tuesday, they came out, they poured some gravel and then last night they compressed that gravel and found that it sunk about a foot below the earth's surface and you can see where that concrete is exposed, all the cracks there. so they shut down some lanes on the freeway at 9:00 last night. we are close to west virginia street just to give you an idea of where we are on 87, and again one southbound lane is closed as is the alma avenue off-ramp. but the on-ramp from 280 is open and crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sinkhole so you definitely want to avoid this area. we would suggest using south alma avenue to -- expressway to 87 or also take monterey road as well and cut across to west capitol expressway to 87th. live in san jose, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu chann

question is whether they can move, pasoo move past thinking about this big deal, move towards the possibility of a 2 1/2 trillion dollars deal, and whether they can come to some conclusion that that's not going to work, it's not going to get past the house, if it has any tax increases. that's the bottom line. we've heard it from speaker boehner on my show yesterday. it's just a matter of head counting. and now you have senator mcconnell's plan out there that he describes as a last ditch effort, but it's already getting praised by democrats like senator reid and house speaker nancy pelosi, so the going bet now inside washington is that they'll continue to talk to try to get to some bigger deal, but that the escape valve is there and it may be in the form of senator mcconnell's potential. martha: that raises a lot of questions about how a deal that looks like that would do in the house. and we heard president obama last night in an interview basically saying if they don't come to a deal, social security checks are in jeopardy, as westerly as august 3rd. here's a piece of sound,
